The Historical Understanding of the Marriage of Joseph and Mary

In devotional language, the blessed mother is the spouse of the Holy Spirit. It seems to me that at least based on the common understanding of these terms in English, he would be her husband. The church does not shy away from referring to Joseph as Mary's husband. That's what it or spouse either way. In terms of her marriage being to Joseph being only for show, that's certainly not the historic understanding.
