Are You a Moral Person or Slave to Power?
Rousseau would say that adhering to brute force is just an act of prudence, not morality. Morality is something much, much different. What he's saying here is brute force is not a legitimate way of determining what rights people have. To say that a man gives himself to some one else, i e, hands himself over, is to say something absurd and inconceivable. Such an act is null and illegitimate because the man who does it is out of his mind. And madness doesn't create any right.
