The Debate About the Role of Dimensions in the Diagnosis of Problems
I think the first question is how is this person remarkable or different from other people? And that's what these dimensions do a better job than categories at telling us. But that question quickly gives way to questions about okay but why does my patient experience particular problems in their life? So just as an example if you take two people with alcohol problems the triggers that are associated with those alcohol problems might differ from one person. I don't know of any clinician that kind of would be comfortable making that assumption. That is one of the current debates in the field going away from categorical clinical view.
