There's a recent paper making the argument that sometimes nothing is better than something. A lot of these small somethings don't recruit enough people, or do enough follow-up and art controlled for potential confounding factors. But some researchers say they can serve as pilot studies to iron out all their methods before moving onto bigger trials.
