What Was Going on Before Fitzroy Was Hired?

In the mid-19th century there was a move on the way to produce weather charts for shipping. A Navy officer, Matthew Fontaine-Mory, had been injured in an accident and could no longer go to sea. So he started looking through log books and compiling information that was recorded as these ships were underway. And eventually his ideas got to Europe where they were really taken in as being very important. Chris Harpow: Europeans look at Mory as being a big deal in meteorology more than Americans do.
