Our fears come from past experiences. We are afraid of abandonment because we've been abandoned before. We're afraid of getting too close because we got close with someone in the past and they used that vulnerability against us. It's so much more powerful to say I'm doing this because I'm afraid of a repeated experience, rather than fear I'm afraid.
