The Role of Faith in Growing Up
Faith was big in my grandmother's family. And faith is still huge in my Ghanaian family. My dad could see no earthly reason why his children or any children of African heritage should automatically be assumed to be kids who couldn't be educated. So he took us out to the Cox world purposely to take us somewhere where there was one school and all the children would get an education. He understood about racism in this country, he'd experienced it. But for him, the possibilities for you as a human being were maybe more around your wealth or your poverty or your location in the country but they certainly weren't about your race.
