The Battle for Magyarization

The running battle over Magyarization will be profoundly important to the course of the Hungarian Revolution. By the late 1840s, the European-wide economic recession had increased the agitation by liberals and nationalists in Hungary. Vienna recognized that they might have to do something before this all got out of hand. Maternik wanted to make sure it was packed with conservatives rather than radicals.
