In 2014, a 92-year-old man was interviewed by Crypto Zoology News. He claims to have been a Boeing B-17 pilot during World War II. The story seems to capture the essence of gremlins quite well. To this day, there are 46 surviving B-17s, 39 of which reside in the United States.
