Jadiah and his men set out in 1828 to trade with the calwatset people. They were attacked by several bears, so Jadiah dives into a stream to get away from them. He writes that many derisively refer to native americans as "dumme" (lazy) What it really is is not trying to profit from their deficiency of genius but simply living on what they're given.
