The Origins of Fruitcake
Fruity is a sexual slang term from the 1930s. Many pop culture references gay nightlife like to reclaim the word and call each other fruit packers. It's derived from the expression nutty as a fruitcake which was once, which was first recorded in 1935. By the 1930s both fruit and fruitcake terms were seen as not only negative but also to mean male homosexual although probably not universally.
