Most of the book's detail is military memoir alternating with insights about history and the position in which America finds itself. The training process walton shows is one of learning military technique while lso figuring out where one fits within a group of men who depend very heavily on each other, not only in battle, but for comaraderi with a great deal of drinking. Walton gives us a worm's eye view of infantry training as he was conducted in two thousand and two many of his fellow soldiers are crisply drawn.
