There's been a long term towards replacing general purpose compute with appliance computes. And the existence of general purpose computing is not god give and right. It's a kind of a historical accident, is a path dependent historical accident. The pc and the mack are the only surviving examples of what used to be the way computers always were. i think crone book is an interesting example of an appliance which really is is being very successful at replacing a generalpurpose compute with appliance computers.
