The Evolution of Humanity
Darwin originally seemed to make people feel very hopeful about the future of humanity because even if those things don't look like humans they're obviously going to be descended from us in some meaningful way. We've begun to entertain again kind of catastrophist ideas since the 50s but gaining a lot more momentum with the discovery of the Chitch Club crater in New Mexico which provides evidence for the impactor that killed the dinosaurs.
