The Wasteland of Stephen and the Medical Students
In the middle of the book, Bloom is in a hospital waiting room with medical students. He joins them out of sympathy for Mrs Purefoy but soon becomes repelled by their learned conversation about birth and conception. While these young men are talking, the great crisis comes. Stephen has been making rather rude remarks about God when abruptly, bang, a prodigious thunderclap sounds. This moment corresponds in Joyce's intention to Vico's idea of man's first notion of God coming through the voice of thunder. Some hear it as the voice of God, threatening and disciplining mankind.
