What Happened to Jerry Joe?
Judge William Booth overturned the UGA decision while trying to register for classes. Both later graduated in 1963 and were the first black students to graduate from UGA. Mr. Holmes became the first African-American student admitted to the Emory School of Medicine. Later he opened up his own private practice and then became a professor and associate director and head orthopedic surgeon at Grady Hospital. He died in October of 1995.
