The Importance of Natural Selection in Evolution
There's a long history of skepticism about the importance of natural selection acting on continuous variation. I think when we want to incorporate development into evolutionary theory, is that we have to also be cognizant of the mechanisms that are associated with generating variation. So it might be that variant groups can form by sympatrix selection. Or organisms can kind of strike out on their own if this happens to a group of organisms somehow their particular genome makes them susceptible to an environmental change. They'll just kind of explore the environment and find some way of kind of mobilizing their new properties so that they can survive.
