People of African descent in the Mormon church were kind of second-class citizens. Men couldn't hold the priesthood and men and women couldn't attend, couldn't enter the temples like white members could. So with that background, if you talk to your parents about how much of that they knew before they got baptized, and if they overcame that to decide that they were okay, getting baptized into a church with that history.
