Jack Cornwall and the Battle of Jockland
Young Jack Cornwall was working on the guns of a smallish British ship called HMS Chester. His job was to carry messages from the captain to the gun and that meant he had to stay with the gun. He stayed by the gun aiming it at the enemy even though the gun was broken. After the battle he was found there, still gripping the gun. Eventually the remaining German ships fled for home. In the end the battle was a draw but none of that helped poor Jack who by the end of the battle was mortally wounded. A few days later his mother couldn't afford a proper funeral so Jack was buried in a grave with lots of other poor people with just one or two members of
