The byzantines and the selducs had met in battle since over 20 years before, but not on this sort of scale. The new sultanate was referred to as the rom sultanate, directly referencing the local name rome - although the people of anatolia were greek speakers. Although they played an important and significant part in anatolian politics for some time afterwards, they would never dominate the peninsula again.
