CHAPTER

Is Democracy a Threat to the Middle East?

People who hate democracy in the middle east tend to be well educated alites. This is one of the reasons i'm sceptical of education as a means to progress. The educated are sometimes the worst people when it comes to basic morality. I think that individuals are products of their environment. And they don't, in some sense, if you've lived under authoritarianism your whole life and dictatorship is all you know. That's why i generally reserve the category of evil for regimes and not for the people who live under them. There's no way to completely eradicate the authorit and temptation. But that's part of a broader, long term struggle.
