The Purpose of Magellan's Voyage

The purpose of Magellan's voyage was to find a legendary spice island. The expedition happened to accomplish the feat out of necessity, not out of some desire to make history. To understand why Magellan wanted to find the Malukas, we need to step back in time to the Iberian Peninsula. In this day and age, Portugal often gets forgotten by many. It kind of blends in and looks like it should be part of Spain on the map but in the 1400s it was a powerful and wealthy kingdom.
