The Evolution of Stress

In physiology, we're taking systems that are developed over millions of years and applying them to our activity. The main place I want to mention for athletes is like all of these stress responses that are a manner of adaptation. But constant stress decreases fitness and survivability. Things like rest days are so important because evolutionary processes dictate that if you're under that constant load, bad things are going to happen.
