Why Is This Message of Grace So Difficult for the Post Modern Church?

Why is this so difficult for the post modern church, specifically in the west? Because we cannot fathom a scenario in which we are not rewarded based on human effort exclusively. Since our earliest memories were baptized into the marriage system and that leaven has combined with the lens of legalism. The kingdom of god does not work that way. Why? Because grace is unmerited favor.
