The great forerunner of Catullus was Sappho, the Greek poet from the island of Lesbos. What we know about Catullus mostly comes from his poetry. We don't know if he actually saw the end of it. It's possible that Catullus just stopped writing poetry at the age of 30 or fell out of the public eye.
