The Pythagorean First Principles

Pythagoreans believed in some kind of mathematical order, undergirding reality. The one is described in some sources as a male-female principle. So it's not a perfect utter unity beyond unity that we find in later Platonist tradition but some kind of hermaphroditic first creation which then goes on to give rise to the universe as we know it.
