The Relationship Between Softness and Performance

There's a thought that softer balls don't go as far. Can we talk about softness, hardness? Is that related to compression? I don't know too much about it, but any material differences there of playing a very soft ball versus a harder one in performance. A lower compression softer golf ball will have lower ball speed on a driver.
