The Punishment of a Criminal in the Year 1757

The punishment was to be implemented in public, the steps of the church. The nation state that sentenced this prisoner to this punishment was not modelled after the enlightenment. This particular society would have been grounded in social contract theory. When a crime is commit in one of these societies, it is seen as a direct affront to the authority of the king. But more importantly than either of those two things, when a crime is committed in one ofthese societies, it's seen as an attack on the body politic.
