The Importance of Suffering
There's a PHP or PHS equivalent in every state who helps your institution navigate the process. They provide oversight for physicians and crisis from mental illness, including substance-use disorders. For us as surgeons, this is coupled with a fear of losing your career. We are conditioned to put our patients' health above all else. But it is not caregivers and caretakers. Suffering is universal.
