Fitzgerald wrote about both his own nervous breakdown and his battle with alcoholism. He's also writing about what it was like to have lived in America in the 1930s after speakeasies, Charleston-ing literal and metaphorical of the 1920s. I really struck me just... I'd read it long, long, long time ago and then rereading it just this last few days. It's that extraordinary ability that great writers have to make it feel like it was written yesterday.
