The Pendulum Swings Too Far in the Design Before Code Direction

In my career, I've seen rather terrible spaghetti code driving commercially successful products. A balanced upfront design effort is required proportional to the business scope and safety impact of the product in question. If you're expecting this product to be on the market for decades or have lots of derivatives then maybe you should slow it down a little bit.
