The Book of Job

Job is smitten with boils and his abject, entirely sitting on a pile of darn while his wife says curse, God and die. Initially, he refuses that advice to curse God and die, but it's not clear at all that he does over the course of the book. After this debate and discussion that goes nowhere between Job and the comforters, God comes in as a voice out of the whirlwind. The sheer hauntingness of the poetry of Job is something that makes it so attractive a book. And yet at the same time, it's the most male and desolate book we can imagine.
