Conditions at the Welcome Center

This chapter discusses the conditions faced by individuals who are transported to a fenced-in abandoned school after being on a bus, thinking they are going to another stage of detention. They are forced to provide their information to nonprofit workers, with no paid interpreters available. An automated translation is played over a megaphone, making it difficult to understand. After waiting in line for hours, they are given tickets to eat, but the food is of poor quality. Some people refuse to eat and endure these conditions without having slept or eaten much. Eventually, they are told to make their own way to their sponsor, unless they lack the funds, in which case they are provided with shelter for a limited time.
