The treaty of schunbran, as this agreement would come to be known, was a severe blow to the legitimacy of the holy roman empire. France and prussia were still not formerly allies, but it was now clear to all europe that prussia had bent the knee to napoleon. Austria was frances greatest historic rival, and had fought wars against france three times in 13 years. Hapsburg power maintained order in most of central and southern Europe for centuries. A strong austria had been the main bulwark holding back the ottomans turks.
