The One Child Policy in China
China's one-child policy was implemented in 1980. Those who had more than one child risked losing their jobs, some were sent to jail and couples who went through with a second pregnancy had to pay hefty fines. Women were dragged to hospitals and forced to have abortions. One of the most infamous cases was in 2012 when 22-year-old Feng Tianme was seven months pregnant with her second child. She and her husband were told to pay a fine of 40,000 yuan, or 6,000 US dollars, a fine which they could not afford.
