The Importance of Concentration Risk Limitation in Portfolio Construction

I think risk mitigation at the extreme level to me is more prudent risk management. But I can certainly understand another philosophy, that being, I want to have concentrated bets because this is the one that pay off. It just unclear to me which one of the two over the longer term is better. The frequency at which those extremes are occurring is too little to make any economic assessment whatsoever. An extra dollar of gain in the extreme is providing less happiness versus a dollar of loss.
