In general the confidence curve I think is sort of this like rising and falling. You don't want to be trying to trick people into things when you're persuading because even if it works in the short term it'll backfire in the long term. It's much more important to have a trusting relationship. These kind of rhetorical tricks are a bit like makeup. Like used judiciously it can flatter our best features and minimize our drawbacks. Used sort of injudiciously it could make us look clownish but no amount of makeup will make a big beautiful. A small edge really matters, so having a good argument doesn't absolve you from ethical questions about persuasion.
