The Advantages and Disadvantages of District Judges
There are many advantages to the current system of lay justices but it also has its critics. I have long harbored concerns about lay magistrates being asked to decide questions of law. It is not something that we ask of lay juries in the crown court. All legal matters including bail and passing sentence are determined by qualified judges. And unfortunately, I have seen a lot of erroneous decisions by lay magistrates.
