My parents were both of them first generation to college. My father had done his PhD after his MD, his PhD in Czechoslovakia between 1958 and 1962. When he went back to Colombia, he was labeled as a communist and therefore he was not offered a paying position. The label stayed for years after until I was maybe a teenager.
