I think it's been lesson about that culture matters more than we sometimes wish to admit. The withdrawal from afghanistan is a sign that the west is simply less worried about failed states now than it was in the immediate aftermath of 9/11. We had come to believe that democracy was the ind of natural state of man, and if you removed the dictator, that what would follow would be democracy. And so why shouldn't we think for they want the same freedom we want? I've got a couple more thoughts on why, again, i thought history was basey moving our way.
