The Byzantine Empire

The byzantine empire was the remnant of the roman world, centred in constantinople. It would fall to the arabs and become a much more localized nation. The christian church established its own identity, which alienated it from rome. Foreign enemies would attack byzantine territory but all sieges resulted in failure.
