In November 1843, Philander Avery was kidnapped by Missourians and taken across the river. Joseph Smith saw the Avery kidnappings as being related to past attempts to extradite him to Missouri. The Latter-day Saints in Nauvoo responded to what they saw as extreme danger with extreme city ordinances.
