The Role of Etiquette in Recognizing Equality
I don't feel like most social norms are about signaling equality, I think they're mostly about signaling inequality. We have lots of really complicated social hierarchies that show up even at the high table in Oxford or when I give a top people are always thanking me for my time. It just seems to me that very very much of our architecture of signaling respect to one another is not aimed at signaling equality it's aimed at signaling inequality.
