How to Make a 3D Space Map

The Animorphs series which was my favorite book series growing up they never included a map. There's some big big reasons why you wouldn't want to and one of the ones that I think breaks my heart the most is the difficulty of making maps of space. Want to have a map where you might want to push them in a different direction use them as a character or maybe just for yourself but we haven't really talked a whole lot about examples of things that haven't historically included maps.
