In the Middle Ages people didn't just walk around villages speaking Latin and read in Latin, okay? Only a small group of people spoke red Latin. Medieval Roman Catholicism for all the crazy stuff going on, they still read Scripture in the context of the mass. It was believed, and still believed in Roman Catholicism, that when the priest says this is my body, something happens.
