The Government's Strengthening Character Test Bill
The government introduced the strengthening character test bill, which was legislation designed to increase the imigration minister's powers to deport non citizens who had committed a crime. Changes to the bill would allow criminal offenders to be deported even if they receive less than a year's jail. The new rules are expected to apply to about ten thousand visa holders. This is like the federal equivalent of the tough on crime am battle in queensland politics, says emerald.
