The Robins: A Black Backroom Man Who Dedicated His Life to Black Music
Ralph Bass was the A&R man who signed Johnny Otis to Savoy. He'd always had a love of music, and used to watch Chick Webb as a teenager. As an amateur musician he also worked for Shell - but wanted to make his own records. The Robins recorded without his unvarious labels. However, they didn't like the name, and soon settled on the Robins. Their first single, Around About Midnight, was a remake of Roy Brown's earlier,. Long About Midnight, and it's really rather good.
