There was almost no empirical research at that time in any of this stuff. So many of Tom's hypotheses have now been tested, and we have pretty dramatic evidence that these things actually happen. But most of the things that he hypothesized about have not been tested because we can't get good debt on them. Two sociologists got a grant from the Council of Ivy League Presidents in around 1999 to study the pipeline of minorities into academia. They interviewed thousands of students. And they found a big mismatch affected play.
