The Role of Castles in the Norman Conquest
The use of castles is so closely associated with the Normans that the chroniclers often use the term castle men when talking about them. In Williams' reign alone the Normans may have built over 200 castles, and of these over 90 were converted to stone and can still be seen. By 1100 there are over 3000 castles in England.
