The Blind Spots of Journalists

I think the biggest blind spot as a journalist is that we, by value of our craft, assume that having control of language enables us to essentially have status and power. And one of the problems is that for many people that doesn't seem inevitable or natural,. they're just being able to talk, makes you extra special or powerful. I was actually running the American News Operation for the FT at that time. It indicated this kind of mindset amongst the journalists. But it also indicated our collective blindness because, of course, a large number of people watching that debate amongst the American voters went, he talks just like me.
